Restaurant Business Magazine and its sister publications changed hands three times during my tenure supporting them: Schofield/Ideal Media, CSP Information Group, and finally Winsight Media.
In addition to managing the online presence and social media accounts for Restaurant Business Magazine, I was the copy editor for our regular columns including “20 Minute University” with the Culinary Institute of America, “Advice Guy” with Jonathan Deutsch, Ph.D., Professor of Culinary Arts and Food Science at Drexel University in Philadelphia, “One Minute Manager” from Bill Main and other well-known industry influencers.
I was the independent managing editor and journalist for now-disabled MyIDAccess.com from 2009 to 2017, a digital-only news journal for broadline foodservice distributors. I maintained relationships with the top leaders in the business, provided daily industry news coverage direct to the website, compiled the annual Top 50 Distributors report and analysis, profiled top performing salespeople in the “DSR of the Month” column, and produced the weekly ID Report email newsletter. (The content has been rolled into the Restaurant Business Magazine website. Dead, but not gone!)
I was also a regular contributor to the print Restaurant Business Magazine and covered the gamut, from quick-hit lists to feature articles on digital marketing trends and trendsetters, emerging technologies, low-tech service tactics, event coverage, hospitality changes, up-and-coming ingredients and operations efficiencies. Basically, I had to be as nimble and well-versed in the industry as the audiences we supported.
- Nominated for Jesse H. Neal Award – Best Subject-Related Package for Restaurant Business magazine's March 2012 cover story: "The Social Media 50."
- Co-launched the monthly "Recipedia" newsletter, which opened a multi-audience revenue stream for in-house and advertiser-contributed content, and resulted in a 10% website traffic increase.
- Promoted and edited the "Advice Guy" column with Jonathan Deutsch, Ph.D. starting in 2010, which became a successful "must-read" that continues to thrive.
- Discovered and implemented user-level customizable homepage technology for MonkeyDish.com that received a FOLIO: Ozzie Awards Gold Medal for Best Site Design in 2008.
She both created content and helped developed the back end—an enormous project that led to a Folio award for Monkeydish. Amanda also directed the debut of the Recipedia newsletter, which is still going strong. She developed the template and content for this newsletter and it served as a model for others that followed. I can genuinely say that Amanda Westbrooks is a digital guru and a pioneer in content creation for the industry.
